Just finished reading.........more bloody books!

I have to admit that being a college student has its pros and cons. On the whole it is widening my experience of literature and I'm grateful for that but it has to be said that reading 18th century novels does have an effect on my writing. I don't think writing like Jane Austen is going to get me published.
I had to take a break and read something with modern language and a friend suggested (as friends always do) yet another book to read.
So what's the problem? I hear you ask. Do you know how long my reading list is? Longer than both my arms sewn together and I'm running out of space due to the addiction to Amazon.co.uk. Books for just 1p yes I know isn't that fab 1p!
So I was reluctant to purchase another bloody book considering my house is overun with the damn things like they breed and hatch like rabbits and get under the feet.
I am not a technophobe so why the hell haven't I joined every other person and bought myself a Kindle? The answer is simple. I want a holiday this year and all money has to go towards that. Yes I am moaning about being jobless and poor and I have no shame what so ever. I need a holiday to get away from all those bloody books!

So what is my point? Ah yes the book that my good friend Kevin asked me to read was 'The Book Thief' by Markus Zusak.
Have you read this book? Well in my opinion it is a truely fabulous read. Just to wet your appetite the story's narrator is Death (The person!...yes you know.. black cloak sickle in hand and a strong cockney accent. Yeah that's right HIM! Yes Death.) and its set in Germany during the second world war. Now Death himself isn't the dark gloomy figure I have in my minds eye. He was very wise, kind and gentle in his persona throughout the story. This took me by surprise and when reading I like to be lead along thinking I know everything the world has to offer and then wham! Something different. Well done Markus Zusak you have surprised me. If your looking to be taken out of your box then this is the book for you!
And as for me its back to Pride & Prejudice. Hark is that Mr Darcy I hear calling my name? Damn it is.........

  1. After a year of reading nothing but British literature, I have been using my summer to read stories that have indor plumbing and television. And you are right, no one is going to get published writing like the Romantics.

As a broke college student myself, I have learened to wear it like a badge of honor. At least you are in London. That is much more hip than Reno, Nevada.
